Yesterday was such a wonderful, warm and sunny day …just kidding it rained again. But my son and I did get out for a while and drove around in the nasty weather we were experiencing and decided to take a few shots of Hanging Rock Falls here in Madison Indiana.
Hanging Rock Falls is the name sake for Hanging Rock Hill which connects the Historic Downtown which lay on the banks of the Ohio River with the newer hilltop here in my hometown. It is about a 40 foot waterfalls that stays mostly dry all year because it only drains a very small area, but when we get heavy rain as we did yesterday it can turn into torrent as you can see in my images !!
The other cool thing about this falls is that you can actually drive behind it to get an interesting view you can’t always get from any other waterfall and you don’t even have to get out of your car !! We also took a short hike at Clifty Falls State Park and the waterfalls up there were incredible as well, the only problem with that is you can’t see them because of the growth of the foliage around and in front of them, sort of like going to a museum and having a drape pulled over a Monet 😉
I might try to get out this afternoon and get a few more images of the many falls that dot the countryside here in Madison, or maybe I will just cut the grass that is becoming quite high and get up on yard work, I already know the answer to that question..it’s time to get wet !!

TOTALLY digging this. I’ve never been by when the waterfall was anything more than a trickle. Last fall, camera in hand, I got some wide shots of the hanging rock, but the falls were dry. It is pretty neat Terry.
Seems an odd place to put a road, in front of a waterfall. I checked Jim’s photos and got a better feel for it. In a way, very convenient for a great photo op. I have to walk at least a mile in to get waterfalls of any size, and that’s after I drive to Northern WI.
The road actually went under it but it kept washing out so they filled in the area below the falls and built the road in front of it.
The area I live in here in Indiana is not really flat at all like most believe it is really very step with many canyons and gorges Bo, really a beautiful area !!

Wow …. .This is amazing !! Not many waterfalls are that easily accessible !!
Wonder how it will look like if there is a thunderstorm or heavy rain ? Will more (smaller) waterfalls appear ? If you ever have the chance (play safe too) during a wet weather, do capture the waterfall pics !!

That is an interesting waterfall Bernie. I’ve never seen one drain out onto the sidewalk before.
It is actually a highway Richard, and it usually closes it down when it rains really hard !!

Oh my goodness. I love Madison. It is my hometown too! You could search all over the world and not find as much beauty as there is in this small town.
I have found a black and white post card, possibly circa 20’s-30’s that say Hanging Rock Falls Madison, IN. It was given to me by my Father in the late 80’s with an assortment of very old fragile post cards from around the world. I was born in Muncie, IN and maybe visited Madison once in my life and never heard of this place before. It looks and sounds beautiful.
