Spring is trying to break thru but this incredibly cold winter pattern we have been in just won’t give up it’s icy grip on the Madison Indiana area.
I captured these yesterday at Clifty Falls State Park and the weather was actually tolerable but then last night we get two more inches of snow just to add to this already never ending winter.
But there is hope starting tomorrow a big warm up is being predicted and will last thru the weekend and then…. you guessed it more cold and snow forecast for the first of next week lol !!!
Believe it or not I actually forgot to post a couple shots of something I wanted to share from this past winter, with everything else I shot it just slipped thru, I was able to capture a few images of some frozen ice abstracts from a creek near my home here in Madison Indiana.
First thing about shooting on a frozen creek is don’t fall thru. Sounds simple but it always seems to happen to me and on this day it did again, thank goodness the water was shallow, just make sure your careful and the water below is shallow and if you have any concerns find some place else. You will definitely need a tripod to give the camera a stable platform to shoot from and I use me Sigma 150 mm macro for all my closeup photography.
Basically I then start out looking for interesting patterns in the ice to come up with interesting compositions, the hardest part from me was finding good comps on ice that I could then set up and photograph on without falling thru lol !!
Small apertures and long exposures usually are in order and when I get to post processing I converted most the images to black and white for a more dramatic feel. And after all that here are a couple images from this shoot on the ice that cold winter’s day.
Just remember to be careful on the ice and hopefully there won’t be any more ice to photograph this year and you have to try it out next winter !!
I give up winter has won and I am crying uncle, please someone just end it now and let us head straight into spring. It has been a long, cold and snowy winter and I haven’t even begun to pay the heating bills yet on the last blast and now we are heading into another “Polar Vortex” !!!
So after all this whining about winter let me share with you the great thing about winter and that is winter photography. We have had an abundance of snow this year and it has made for some great compositions that only snow can give you. Winter landscapes make for great black and white conversions and also you have wonderful blue bird sky’s that you only get this time of year !!
I took a hike the other day right after a small snow event looking for comps with moving water or any other type of snow and water scene that I was hoping to capture this winter. I hiked into a small canyon that led into the Ohio River near Madison Indiana and was able to not only capture a small cascade with nice flow over it by I photographed the flooded tributary leading into the river as well.
Even though I do love photographing these wonderful scenes hiking in such conditions are uncomfortable at best and can be downright dangerous if you’re not equipped to deal with it. Even though I was ready for the tough conditions I was very thankful when I got back into my truck and cranked up the heat to the blast furnace setting on the dashboard lol !!
Hopefully with every day the sun shines a little longer and we get closer to the first signs of spring so in the meantime get bundled up and get out and capture a few of the beautiful scenes that winter is serving up right now !!
Well it’s been nearly six months since I last a updated this blog, thinking maybe it’s time for an update, the reason for the absence has not been for lack of photography… on the contrary it’s been too much !!
The portrait business has been doing great, which leaves me little time to go out and shoot the things I really love to shoot, macro, nature and landscape. I was warned by many a photographer that once I went down the road of portrait photography that this is the result I would receive. I am not exactly making enough income to support a family with it but for a part time job it is pretty amazing. So I guess big decisions are going to have to be forth coming, I don’t want to give up on the portrait business it is a really nice gig, but I am missing my time spent outdoors. So somehow I have to find some type of balance between the two before I go crazy lol !!
In the the meantime here are couple of shots I captured of the winter blast we endured here in Madison Indian a couple weeks back. I love converting winter images to black & white since the scene is already in monotone, so I converted these images and liked the results.
Hopefully I will figure out away to live in both worlds of photography and maybe update my blog a little more, thanks for stopping by and taking a look !!
I just had a weird idea maybe if I post more pics of the winter we have experienced here in Madison Indiana then maybe karma will strike and spring will arrive faster for us…..Nah but you can dream can’t ya !!
Oh well here a couple more from this past winter anyway, hope you enjoy them because I really didn’t !!
Don’t I wish, just kill it off or a natural death would work as well but this is truly starting to depress me and if it doesn’t change soon I am really going to be hard to live with lol !!
One good thing about winter is that it can make for some great Senior Photography, especially when you have a cool prop…like a train !!
