Madison Indiana Photography

April 3rd 1974 | Madison Indiana

Forty years ago today we saw life changing events here in Madison, I was spared any direct contact, but the destruction we viewed first hand the day after still stays with me today !!

The F4 Tornado missed were we lived by a couple miles to the north and just two years ago on March 2nd another one just missed us from the south by a few miles, with severe weather expected again today who knows !!

But just just to keep you entertained here are a couple videos of the tornadoes that came so close !!

Winter in Downtown Madison Indiana

Reached the 70’s today and with spring inching it’s way closer and closer to us I thought I might keep posting more images from this past winter before it gets too warm. Even though the winter was pretty harsh I was able to come up with quite a few images in between snowstorms and sub zero temperatures.

Spent a lot of time photographing downtown Madison Indiana this past winter, not for any real reason except that I live downtown and could walk to most of the places I shoot lol !!

I converted an awful lot of my images to black and white this winter not for any real artistic reason but maybe just the fact that was the mood that I spent most of my winter in, whatever the reason most of my winter photography tends to end up that way and I kinda like the results.

The first image I captured  at night of Main Street during one of our many snows that we endured,  I really liked the dark and isolated feel to this one, being that cold and late not much was going on anyway so it kinda helped out the mood.

The second I took one morning after a snow from on top of a hill overlooking downtown towards the Power plant. The fog was drifting off the Ohio River partially obscuring the power plant, I also liked the roofs of all the buildings in the foreground adding scale to the photograph.

So here you go just a couple more shots from  my hometown and the wonderful winter we enjoyed this past year…wink wink !!!

Frozen Light

Took a quick hike at Clifty Falls State Park here in Madison Indiana to look for any signs of spring and much to my dismay I didn’t even come across a stray bud or any other emergent foliage in the woods.  My biggest concern is that we will have a few days of great weather and then winter will make another brutal run at us and push the wildflower bloom back all over again !!

So in the meantime I thought I might share some images I captured one very cold and frosty morning on the Ohio River just to the east of Madison.  We were right in the middle of the worst cold snap our part of the country has had in years, and the Ohio River had almost completely frozen over this morning, and even though temps were bottoming out the warm light made a great contrast with the cold ice covering the river.

I found a great deadfall to add some interest to the scene and then when the light busted thru the frozen mist that hung over the river everything came into place to make for a great series of images that morning !!

Even though I couldn’t stand to be outside in such conditions the light and all the other elements that came together made for a wonderful experience on the river that morning !! Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my photography I hope you enjoyed it.

Madison Indiana Winter

Well here it is March 6 and the temperature has actually climbed into the low 40’s time to celebrate. The weathermen actually said temps would close in on near to slightly above normal temps the next seven days,  knock on wood !!

Last year at this time I was prepping for trips to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and to my favorite spot Clifty Falls State Park, but now as I look out the window that time of my life looks like a million miles away, but we are getting there and before you know it I will posting shots with colors besides white all the time !!

So now before spring finally arrives I am going to share images from this past winter here in Madison Indiana, hope you like winter themed images because I sure captured a ton this year and I am really tired of taking and looking at them lol !!

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my photography I hope you enjoy it.

Indiana Winter

I give up winter has won and I am crying uncle, please someone just end it now and let us head straight into spring.  It has been a long, cold and snowy winter and I haven’t even begun to pay the heating bills yet on the last blast and now we are heading into another “Polar Vortex” !!!

So after all this whining about winter let me share with you the great thing about winter and that is winter photography. We have had an abundance of snow this year and it has made for some great compositions that only snow can give you. Winter landscapes make for great black and white conversions and also you have wonderful blue bird sky’s that you only get this time of year !!

I took a hike the other day right after a small snow event looking for comps with moving water or any other type of snow and water scene that I was hoping to capture this winter. I hiked into a small canyon that led into the Ohio River near Madison Indiana and was able to not only capture a small cascade with nice flow over it by I photographed the flooded tributary leading into the river as well.

Even though I do love photographing these wonderful scenes hiking in such conditions are uncomfortable at best and can be downright dangerous if you’re not equipped to deal with it. Even though I was ready for the tough conditions I was very thankful when I got back into my truck and cranked up the heat to the blast furnace setting on the dashboard lol !!

Hopefully with every day the sun shines a little longer and we get closer to the first signs of spring so in the meantime get bundled up and get out and capture a few of the beautiful scenes that winter is serving up right now !!
